Making our own Kites | The Delta

In class we worked on a new project which was to make our own kite based on the story, "The Kite Runner." My group was Chloe, Anna, and Panisa. We chose to make a Delta kite because it reminded us of Hassan. Like Hassan, the Delta kite is common and does not look like much, but once it is in action it stands out in the sky. It flys high and swiftly. Hassan was a commoner and was not anything special to anyone, but he had a talent which was kite running. We chose to make our main color of the kite blue because it is the color of the sky. The sky always changes just like Amir's life. On the very top of the kite is our symbol which is a slingshot. The slingshot represents Hassan and Sohrab's bravery. The color is a pearl-blue color to show how bravery shines throughout the book. On the biggest part of the kite, we have our Character portion.

We chose to talk about Amir in this section. Amir goes through a lot of changes throughout the novel. This is why we created an ombre effect. The dark to light represents how Amir went from being the "bad guy" as a child to the hero in the end of the story. On the bottom of the Character text is a picture of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela follows the symbol at the top of the kite, bravery. Nelson Mandela was a good example of bravery because he stood up for what he believed in and he was in prison for 27 years because of his beliefs. Amir was very brave towards the end of the novel. He fought his childhood bully, Assef, and fought to bring Sohrab to America.

The far right trianlge has our Theme. Our theme was friendship because in the story, a lot of Amir's life had to do with his friendship with Hassan. We painted this a neutral shade of blue because friendship can be good or bad. In the far left triangle is our Turning Point. We chose the part in the novel where Amir sees Rahim Khan for the last time. It is a light blue color because this is an event in the book that really benefitted Amir. He finally discovered the truth about his life and he found out that Hassan was dead, and also found out about Sohrab. This was a highlight in the novel because this was the reason why Amir went back to Kabul to save Sohrab. The three tails on the bottom of the kite represent Amir's childhood, his life in America, and the rescue of Sohrab. We drew a kite for Amir's childhood because kites were a big part of Amir's childhood and it was a statement in his friendship with Hassan. The middle tail has a black heart to represent Amir' life in America. The heart is to represent his love for Soroya who soon became his wife, and the black represents the tragedy of Baba getting sick and passing away. The last tail has a sun emerging from a cloud. We chose this to represent the rescue of Sohrab because in this part of the novel Amir really shines. He becomes the hero in the end of the novel. He was the one who brought the light into Sohrab's life and saved him from misery in Kabul with Assef.

The process of making this kite took about three days. Each member of the group took turns on adding their information to the kite. Making the kite was fun overall, it did not always feel like work at times. It was fun working together.
