AR Books | Shadow Children

Recently, I read one of the books in ‘Shadow Children’ series by Margaret Peterson. There are total 7 books in this series, and I’ll talk about the first one, “Among the hidden”.

Luke is an illegal third child. Government made a population law because they were scared that they might all die due to the lack of foods. So having a third child was illegal. However, Luke used to play outside just like other children. But since government stated to cut down the trees to make a building, he could no longer stay in outside. He had to stay in the attic. Sometimes, he looked at the window secretly and watched people making building. Or he studied people living in a house.

One day, Luke was watching outside. And he saw someone’s face through the window. He was really surprised. When he looked at the window again, the face was already gone. Luke begins to think that there is another third child in his neighbor house. So he went out. He sneaked into the neighbor’s house. After that, Luke found out he was right. There was another third child named Jen Talbot. He learned much useful information about the government, and Jen. She was planning a rally to overturn the Population Law. She asked Luke to go rally together, but Luke couldn’t. He just couldn’t.

Jen died in the rally. All the kids who went to the rally got killed. That was what Luke heard from Jen’s dad when he went back to Jen’s house. Jen’s dad suggested Luke for a fake ID to live free just like other kids. Luke agreed. His whole new life begins as a Lee Grant. (Fake ID)

Fact in this book is that population is actually growing really fast. So I was little bit scared because this might really happen someday. Poor Luke had to hide during his whole life just like no one if he did not get a fake ID. I think it was really good idea to get a fake ID. It would be really hard to live as an illegal third child. I would be frustrated. I wish he could feel some free in the outside as a Lee Grant.
